Holy Crow Beads more than just beads

For an inspirational change, take a tour and drop in to Holy Crow Beads: a beautiful timber-frame home in the country with a working studio, cedar beams and a comforting wood stove. In the town of Blue Mountains, you’ll find countless unique places to visit; included is the bead shop and gallery near Metcalfe caves, Holy Crow Beads. Owned and operated since 2002, by artist Beverley Smith, who moved from Toronto to build her dream. Smith has been a professional artist upon graduating from Sheridan College and weaving College. Well known for her textile art, murals, maps, four published books and `whimsical’ illustrations of the area; Smith cannot think of anything she’d rather do with her artistic talent. Some of Smith’s projects include working with wire, string, yarn, brick, netting and square stitch; the list goes on and on. Smith emphasizes that she is “constantly discovering new beads and techniques and so the samples grow faster than we can keep up with or have room for, but that is the danger in beading”. The studio features hundreds of unique beads from places such as Africa, Turkey, Bali, and Nepal. Her trips to Africa encouraged Smith to work with beads, and in August, 2010, Smith was given the opportunity to travel to Uganda where she taught a group of women an assortment of techniques for making jewellery. Combining their self taught paper beading abilities (since being displaced from their villages during years of armed conflicts and civil wars) with Smith’s knowledge of jewellery, these women now have hopes to make a better life for their families. Yes, the beads are famous! Holy Crow’s is featured in “Beaders Stash: America’s Favourite Bead Shops,” one of 39 shops selected. Smith is honored to be included. In September, 2008, at an international jewellery competition, “Celebrating Beads”, held in Washington D.C, a necklace made from Holy Crow’s finished in the top 10. Notable achievements!
